When the board says, “AI!” CIOs have the daunting task of providing education on the various flavors of AI and steering the board to beneficial investments. Mark Brooks, CIO of Reinsurance Group of America, approached this task by differentiating “FOMO” (risk with no reward), commercial AI (key productivity gains) and enterprise gen AI (where the true value is). Brooks, who cemented this education in the build of a new global data capability, is seeing some real value out of AI, as he discusses in today’s lead item.

Also in this edition: Mark Reimel, CIO at Rosen’s Diversified, on making a career move after a long tenure at one company; and researchers invent a new type of pollution-free fuel cell.

Last week’s question: Thanks to your responses to last week’s question about the “right data” for GenAI, I compiled a tidy list (defining good data as “structured,” “standardized,” and “accurate”). But then I spoke with a technology leader of a customer service business, who fundamentally challenged this definition. To summarize his view: Today's AI doesn't need structured data like old ML models. Today, what matters is "data extent" -- the breadth, depth, and volume of data available for training AI models. Today, you can ingest images, recordings, documents, or PDFs — all as “raw fuel” -- and train the models to make the connection.” (Note: full article with this mystery leader is coming to CIO.com soon.)

Today’s question: Will AI models dramatically reduce our need for structured data? Please let me know on LinkedIn!

U.S., UK Researchers Develop “Solar Fuel” Generator for Clean Energy Production

Curated content 3.20

Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of California at Berkeley have invented a way to make molecules made of carbon and hydrogen – the hydrocarbons that power the modern economy – using sunlight instead of fossil fuels in a mechanical process that mimics photosynthesis. The invention “combines a light absorbing ‘leaf’ made from a high-efficiency solar cell material called perovskite, with a copper nanoflower catalyst, to convert carbon dioxide into useful molecules,” a University of Cambridge announcement said. The process forms hydrocarbons such as ethane and ethylene, building blocks for liquid fuels.
